Spiritual Life

Spiritual life at Houghton is fashioned through a rich composite of prayer, worship, service and mentoring, enabling students to develop their full potential and discover God’s direction for the future. In this environment of high academic standards, enriching co-curricular activities and spiritual vitality, our students flourish as active disciples of Christ.

Living in Christian community creates a vibrant environment for personal and spiritual growth, and serves as a solid foundation for successful careers and lives of service. For many Houghton graduates, the personal relationships and spiritual impact of their college experience last a lifetime.

Outreach and ministry opportunities

Part of Houghton’s Christian identity is a dedication to service and outreach. In addition to our 14 on-campus service groups and numerous opportunities in the local community, many of our students go on mission trips abroad. Our students have built houses in Mexico, worked with the Wycliffe Bible Translators in Cameroon, provided disaster relief in Honduras, and much more.

Building on the example of John Wesley, Houghton not only develops the academic potential of students but also their commitment to personal discipleship, the community of God’s people and service that transforms the world.

Spiritual Life on campus

Spiritual Life at Houghton is most visible perhaps in the regular gathering of the college community in Chapel each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. Here the campus gathers to celebrate our life together in Jesus Christ. Chapels offer a varied program of music, personal testimony and biblical exposition, presented by students, faculty and speakers from outside the community.

What past students say

Left Quotation Mark

I came to Houghton never expecting to find a group of students who truly want to change the world. I found a group of friends who are passionate about seeing God's work of transformation in our community. Through Nehemiah's Restoration I am learning how to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, in a real and tangible way. I have organized Human Trafficking Day and World AIDS Day, and am learning more about God's active plan of redemption for our world. It has been exciting to see the Houghton community come together to do something about AIDS, poerty, and injustice-issues that are close to heartbeat of God.
